While attending ConVal, David Selmer was a central member of the ConVal music scene, both in band and in vocal ensembles. He also excelled in sports as the co-captain of the ConVal Varsity soccer team.
As a senior, Selmer signed up for military service in the New Hampshire Army National Guard. While serving, he pursued a college education, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a double major in Accounting and Finance from the University of New Hampshire in 2019.
Selmer now works as a Financial Services Consultant in the Risk Advisory division of Ernst & Young (EY) in Boston. Ernst & Young is an international company with headquarters in London that oversees one of the largest professional services networks in the world. Along with Deloitte, KPMG, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, EY is considered one of the Big Four accounting firms.
Selmer also continues to serve in the National Guard as a Sergeant First Class (E-7).
Here is David’s reflection:
"Reflecting back, ConVal provided me with perspectives and skills that I still carry forward. Whether it was math concepts taught by every math teacher (I think I had almost all of them), English and humanities discussions taught by Mr. Lambert and Mr. Clark, to the exploration of musical expression with Mr. Wickham, Ms. Morin, and Mr. Aines were all greatly impactful and gave me the courage and base knowledge that I needed to be successful after high school."
"High school is and was an amazing opportunity to discover yourself and step out of your comfort zone. I wish more students would appreciate the opportunities they are afforded as it is a great time to make mistakes and learn who you are. I was very focused on music as I thought my professional career would lead me to be a musician who graduated with a music degree. Consciously, that decision to live a musician's lifestyle was not appealing to me and I needed some other profession to support my professional and financial goals."
"The main inflection point that led me to where I am now was my decision as a ConVal senior to enlist in the New Hampshire Army National Guard nine years ago. This helped refine my college decision — UNH tuition is waived for Guard soldiers — and structure my future to allow me to focus on key decisions such as classes and my professional career rather than stressing about college loans and expenses."
"While taking gap years, summer classes, and intense 20 credit semesters, I was able to graduate with over 150 academic credits (military leadership classes helped) which was important to allow me to qualify for the CPA (certified public accountant) certification after graduating with both an accounting and finance degree. College led me to a career in financial services consulting with major accounting firm Ernst & Young (EY) which has provided numerous opportunities to grow my future in countless ways."
"My military service has continued, where I recently responded to the State's COVID-19 mission for 16 months. I was asked to manage an unemployment call center, personal protective equipment (PPE) warehouse, and co-lead the non-vaccine supply effort for all of the vaccine sites across NH. Without my experience in high school leading the band percussion section and varsity soccer team, I would not have felt confident in my leadership capabilities to be discovered and to develop in these important roles years later."

The idea behind this newsletter is to keep 5th grade parents informed of what students are learning, events coming up, and reminders of important assignments and other miscellaneous happenings. The newsletter is created, designed, and written completely by the students. Editing is also done by the students with the help of Mrs. Hayes and our fantastic Technology Integrator, Theresa Berna.
Mrs. Berna has worked with students over the last few weeks to teach them the skills needed to put together this amazing newsletter. Students have worked very hard and we are so impressed with their creativity, cooperation, and dedication!

Your ConVal School Board and Administration are moving forward in planning the next ConVal Community Forum on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 7-9 PM.
We are excited about providing you this opportunity for a constructive, open, informative and meaningful dialog. With an activity such as this there are lots of things to know so you can be prepared for participating in and making this a successful experience.
To learn all about this activity please see below:
Where and when is the Community Forum?
ConVal High School in the Lucy Hurlin Theater. Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 7-9PM.
What is a community forum?
A community forum is a meeting where people can discuss, share knowledge, and talk to each other about topics of mutual interest.
Why do we need a community forum?
School board meetings, being business meetings, provide a limited venue for The ConVal School Board and Administration to engage with our community. We believe in being open and transparent in all of our activities. We believe in ensuring that the ConVal community is engaged and informed. A community forum is one mechanism to achieve these goals.
How do I attend the Community forum?
We are providing two ways for the public to attend the community forum. You can come to the Lucy Hurlin Theater at ConVal high school to attend in person or you can attend the forum via a live stream feed from the forum.
How is the Community Forum organized?
We have selected three important topics to be presented. Each topic will start with a presentation and after the presentation there will be an opportunity for either audience to ask questions. Each question will be answered by the presenter or by a member of the School Board or Administration. After the three selected topics are over we have allowed time for the audiences to ask questions on any other school district relevant topic. There will be a moderator that will control the flow of information and activities at the community forum.
How are questions presented?
After each of the prepared topics are presented the in-person audience will have an opportunity to ask questions directly to the moderator who will direct the question to the appropriate person to answer. Members of the audience that are remote and on the live-stream will be able to submit their questions via email to community forum members. These folks will select questions from the emails received and give to the moderator who will direct the question to the appropriate person to answer.
How do I attend remotely via live stream and how do I submit questions?
The live stream will be done as a YouTube event. This will mean that the community forum will be recorded as a video on YouTube so that not only can it be viewed as it is taking place but it can be viewed at any time after the community forum is completed as it will be on YouTube servers forever.
To access this YouTube feed, click on this link ConVal Events. Or type in this link https://www.youtube.com/c/ConValEvents, then select the “2022 May 12 Community Forum” video from the list of available videos.
To send in a question via email please use the following email address: forum@conval.edu.
Why should I attend the ConVal community forum?
It is your money, it is your school district, it is the education of your children, and it is your community. Be involved. Make a difference.
How do I get some information about the presentations prior to the forum?
We will be posting, approx. one week in advance of the forum, an outline of each presentation so you will have time to formulate your questions and send them in advance of the forum, if you desire. We will also include in that communication the email address to use.
What topics are being presented?
There will be three presentations, as follows:
Learning recovery
Overarching Concerns
Cumulative Learning Loss
Widening Gaps in Performance
Widening Gaps in Opportunity
Long-term Impact
Goal of Learning Recovery
Layered approach to addressing learning loss: coaching, tutoring, expanded learning, SEL
Programs in place to date
Presented by Administration
Student Behavior, Positive Support and Policy
Different issues for different schools/grades

Pre-School For All
What is pre-school for all, and why is it important?

After graduating from ConVal High School in June 2017, Hannah Garfinkle enrolled at the University of New Hampshire and graduated as a University Scholar in May 2021 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Management and Policy: Program and Event Management, with an additional minor in Health Management and Policy: Public Health.
Hannah currently works at Vanderbilt University as a Program Coordinator in the School of Medicine where she collaborates with faculty members and healthcare professionals from Vanderbilt, Lipscomb University, and the University of Tennessee to offer interprofessional learning opportunities to over 80 students studying Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Counseling, and Social Work.
Here is Hannah’s reflection:
"I was fortunate enough to have an incredibly positive high school experience at ConVal. I played field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, and was involved in clubs like Student Athletic Leadership Team, while also serving on Prom Committee and helping out, on an as-needed basis, with student council."
"Serving in leadership roles throughout my time at ConVal instilled the confidence I needed to serve as a leader in all aspects of my life. I will always be grateful for all of the mentors I had along the way, whether that was upperclassmen, coaches, faculty, or staff. My involvement in athletics and extracurriculars ultimately shaped the direction of my career. I proudly chose Recreation Management and Policy as my path of study, where I realized that I could pursue a career in what I loved the most."
"From an academic standpoint, I feel that I was more prepared than most of my peers when I went to college. I obtained several academic skills at ConVal that not only transferred into my life as a college student, but into my life as a regular citizen in society. ConVal always harped on the importance of note-taking, meeting deadlines, studying, group projects, etc. Spoiler alert – you will need those skills beyond high school. Whether you decide to enter the workforce, enlist in the military, go to college, pick up a trade, volunteer, etc., you will always need to be able to work with others, you will always have a schedule, you will always need to remember details, etc. The skills that ConVal had taught me through academic schooling have been utilized in my personal and professional life."
"During my 4 years at ConVal, thanks to Mr. Bowman, I was lucky enough to tag along with the student council on their annual trip to New York City to volunteer with the Youth Service Opportunities Project, where we engaged in service experiences that provided us with hands-on volunteer work throughout the city. I believe these trips were the moments that defined my passion for volunteering."
Since my time at ConVal, I have volunteered in a few capacities. I volunteered with UNH Athletics where I gained a well-rounded understanding for the Division 1 sports world. I also volunteered with Northeast Passage, a non-profit Recreational Therapy and Adaptive Sports program. I coached youth sled hockey for participants with physical disabilities. My love for sports only grew deeper through this experience and I consider it a privilege to have contributed to these kids' lives at any capacity."
"After my graduation from UNH, I made a big move, 1200 miles from home where I landed in Nashville, TN. I accepted a job as a Program Coordinator at Vanderbilt University where I support students who are entering into the medical fields. Working in higher education has been such a rewarding experience, and I have learned so much from my colleagues and students who come from all different backgrounds and interests."
"I am still heavily involved in volunteering, working at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee where I help organize and sort food for underserved populations in middle Tennessee. I am also a volunteer coach for a girl’s youth hockey team with the Nashville Jr. Predators for the 2022-2023 season where I look forward to my involvement in the Nashville hockey community."
"My time at ConVal laid the groundwork for what was to come in my next chapters. The faculty and staff who choose to work at ConVal are one of a kind, and we are so lucky to know them. I feel truly grateful for the time I spent in the district and the education I received."
"If you are a current student, my word of assurance would be that you are almost always more prepared for things than you think you are. My word of advice would be to learn from every person and opportunity that you are presented with, to enter every situation with an open mind, to listen more than you speak, and to never judge people by their cover. Like Mr. Putnam always says every morning: 'Win the day!'"

In our continuing commitment to provide an open, transparent and informative dialog with the ConVal community your School Board and Administration is pleased to announce the next ConVal quarterly Community Forum. This forum will take place both at the Lucy Hurlin Theater at ConVal High School and via live stream on Thursday, May 12, 2022, 7-9 PM.
Learning from our previous two forums, we felt that the live stream community also needed to be heard and participate in the forum. Live stream participants will be able to submit questions to the forum presenters, school board and administration during the forum via email.
As we provided in the first two forums the live feed will be on YouTube so the forum can be viewed interactively or, if needed, at your convenience any time after the forum is over.
We will also be posting, in advance of the forum, an outline of each presentation so you will have time to formulate your questions and send them in advance of the forum.
We are putting together all the necessary logistics to make this community forum a success for all. We will send out a more comprehensive communication prior to the forum that will contain all of the needed details.
Schedule for communications:
Initial communications – 4/27 – This one

Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America's greatest art forms.
In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
Inspired by the dialectical theatre works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown catapults the "comedic romp" into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.
Participating students include: Doc Cassidy, Hadi Lancaric, Dan Sleeper, Haley Seraine, Jessica Hench, Liasiah Torres, Beau Olesky, Nick DiNino, Alissa Cutting, AJ Mackensen, Nicole Davison, Isabelle Stehly, Esther Janis, Rowan Davidson, Annelise Strong, Avery Swasey, Max DePoyster, Alexander Humphrey, Hannah Leahigh, Kalyn Ross, Morgan Salisbury, Makila Sesito, Ace Smith, Kaitlyn Stone, Luca Stowell, Alex Williams, Jazzy Woodhouse, Caroline Stultz, Rex Schaub, Jennifer Hopkins, Elijah Lacroix, Josh Ellis, Fransisco James, Frank LeBlanc, Rhiannon Moore, and Kettu Reynolds.

A group of ConVal High School juniors recently visited New England College to learn about the admission process and to get a look at college life at NEC. For two thirds of them, this was their first visit to a post-secondary institution because in-person visits were not permitted during the COVID restrictions of the last two years.
The tour included a stop at the John Lyons Center, a modern, 19,000-square-foot academic building. It includes state-of-the-art classrooms, seminar rooms, study lounges, a learning commons, group study areas, faculty offices, and a café.
After the tour, students shared what they had learned about the college admissions process. For many, the visit reinforced the School Counseling Department's recommendation to start the process early. "The earlier you start, the better," noted one student. "Start the FAFSA [financial aid process] right away on October 1," agreed another.
Students also commented on what they observed about college life: "There's a lot of flexibility in college. It's easy to meet new people."
For many, the trip to New England College served as an inspiration to organize similar tours for themselves, planning to visit both in-state colleges and out-of-state universities in the months to come.

In addition to practicing vocabulary words, ordinal numbers, and grammatical particularities like the dative case, an important aspect of learning a new language is to become familiar with other countries' social norms. To this purpose, students in Cindi Hodgdon's German III class learned how birthday parties are being celebrated in German-speaking countries and what party games are typically organized.
One of the traditional German games is "Schlag the Topf" ("Hit the pot") which dates back to the Middle Ages. One player is blindfolded and given a wooden spoon with which they have find — and hit — an upside down pot on the floor. The remaining party guests guide the player with calls like "heiß" (hot) and "kalt" (cold) or "kälter" (colder), depending how close or far the player is to finding the target. Once the pot is hit, the player gets the prize hidden beneath it.
The Venn diagram below shows where American and German birthday celebrations differ and where they overlap.

"Haelli restriction," "enzyme dilution," "Annaeling," "Taq polymerase master mix," "DNA extraction buffer," "TAS2R38 gene variations" — if none of these terms come up in your daily conversations, you are certainly not alone. But to the students in Valerie Moran's Biology Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) last week, these were the concepts and building blocks for an experimental study on genetic predispositions to their individual sensitivities to bitter tastes associated with phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) or glucosinolates.
At the beginning of this day-long, in-school field trip, students were divided into two groups — tasters and non-tasters — depending on whether they found a medical PTC test strip as tasting bitter or neutral. Typically, the ratio of tasters to non-tasters varies between populations but every test group normally has some tasters and some non-tasters. On average, 75% of people can taste PTC while 25% cannot. The students in Moran's class were evenly divided between tasters and non-tasters (10:10).
Following this initial assessment of the test groups composition, the scientific research began. Classical Mendelian inheritance dictates who can taste and not taste PTC; however, other factors contribute to the strength of this trait. The combination of inherited alleles along with the interactions between other genes that control facets of taste affect the overall reaction to PTC.
The ability to taste PTC is now linked to the presence of the protein taste receptor 2 member 38 that is encoded by the TAS2R38 gene on chromosome 7. This gene has 2 alleles: the dominant allele (T) confers the ability to taste PTC, while the recessive allele (t) confers the non-taster phenotype.
Sequence analysis of the TAS2R38 gene revealed that PTC taster and non-taster alleles can differ due to SNP’s at 3 distinct locations along the 1143 base pair long coding region of the gene. Each SNP leads to a change in the structure of the receptor protein which affects how well the receptor protein can bind to PTC, which affects the person’s ability to taste PTC.
Students evaluated the presence of one of these SNPs in their own DNA sequence in order to determine their genotype. Students then extracted their own DNA, amplified a segment of the PTC-tasting gene through PCR, used restriction enzymes to identify a possible base pair change in the target sequence, and visualize their genotype on a gel. This allowed students to see how well genotype predicts phenotype.
In doing the extended lab, students learned to explore three molecular biology techniques: DNA extraction, PCR (amplification of their DNA), and gel electrophoresis. The lab also provided students with the opportunity to explore the connection between their genes and their expression, something most people never get a chance to experience.
The type of information that students gathered during the ELO could one day be used to help prevent and treat disease, as well as design new drugs tailored to an individual's genetic profiles.

During a recent lab activity, Carol Young's Honors Chemistry students tested several types of solutions to determine pH — how acidic or basic the solutions are — and conductivity, i.e. how well the solutions conduct electricity). To do this, they used pH and conductivity sensors plugged into a Vernier digital interface.
The students found that chemical compounds, such as salts, that form electrolytes when dissolved in water had higher conductivity and more acidic pH's. Compounds such as sugar that do not make electrolytes had lower conductivity and were less acidic. They were surprised to find that distilled water had a slightly acidic pH of 6 while hydrochloric acid was extremely conductive.

In this assignment, the students exercise total choice in their work, selecting every aspect of their work through knowledge they have learned and shared in class.
In addition to learning music theory, instrumentation and techniques of composition, students have studied functions of film scoring through various types of media to determine how to create music independently that aligns and enhances the actions, thoughts and emotions of characters, plot and their development.
"I am very proud of each of them for expressing themselves through music in such wonderful and brilliant ways," said Moore of his class.

The students have been learning about New Hampshire birds with the help of Ben from the Harris Center. They saw 8 different species as they walked around the school grounds. The students also learned how to tell the difference between a crow and a raven, and a turkey vulture and a bald eagle while they were flying.
The warmer weather brings us a wonderful opportunity to get the students outside to experience the world around them.

The students have been learning about New Hampshire birds with the help of Ben from the Harris Center. They saw 8 different species as they walked around the school grounds. The students also learned how to tell the difference between a crow and a raven,

Keenan Wilson (Class of 2019) is currently an undergraduate student at St. Lawrence University, studying Psychology and Public Health with the goal of earning his Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree in 2023. St. Lawrence University offers an exchange program that is based in Vienna, the capital city of Austria whose history dates back to about the first century AD. Vienna is renowned for its cultural offerings, and the St. Lawrence exchange program’s courses in psychology, history, art, and music take advantage of this unique environment.
Here is Keenan's reflection:
"This semester I have been studying abroad in Vienna, Austria, through an exchange program at St. Lawrence. When I was a student at ConVal, I took two semesters of German with Frau Concannon. During this time, I was able to gain an understanding for the language but also the areas that speak German as a mother tongue. It was through this course that I gained an appreciation for some of the unique linguistic and cultural differences in Germany and Austria. This experience gave me an idea of many of the possibilities that studying abroad in a German speaking country could offer. When I arrived in Vienna, I was able to place into a slightly higher German course, having taken none in college, due to my courses at ConVal."
"I have skied my whole life, and during my time at ConVal I was a member of the alpine ski team. My love of skiing that I developed at Crotched and racing at ConVal is another large reason that I am studying abroad in Austria. This deep-seated love of skiing was also a big reason that I chose to study abroad in Austria. Ski racing at ConVal really improved my skiing abilities, and combined with my lifetime of skiing I was set on skiing when I went abroad."
"Since I have arrived in Austria I have travelled many times to ski in the Austrian Alps. A wonderful train system takes me across the country — Vienna is farther from the alps than you think — to the towering peaks of the Alps. Having skied many times here this winter, I must say that I am extremely grateful that I ski raced at ConVal. I will admit my bias, my amazing mother is the coach of the team, but the skills that I learned racing have given me the ability to ski the craziest of lines on the most beautiful mountains in the world."
"At ConVal I was also able to work with End 68 hours of Hunger. This was a program that I learned about through my time in the National Honor Society (NHS) and provides an amazing service to our community. I was lucky to be able to work with them stocking food after school. The mission of End 68 is to provide food to those students outside of school hours who may not have consistent access to meals, and I have learned that to bridge this recurring time of food insecurity is extremely important. I was so inspired by the wonderful people that put their time and effort into this group and am very happy to have gotten to know and work with them all."
"When I got to Vienna, I made the decision to run a marathon. At ConVal, I ran for enjoyment outside of my sports, and always loved taking long runs down beautiful Francestown roads or up the back of Crotched Mountain. Having run a few half marathons, I decided that now was as good a time as ever to run a full marathon. I found out that the Vienna Marathon is on April 24, which is towards the end of my time abroad. I know that many people run marathons to raise money for charity, and when I committed to the Vienna marathon, my mind immediately went to End 68."
"My time at ConVal prepared me for the amazing experience that I am currently living. The German courses prepared me both linguistically, but also culturally, to fully experience and appreciate this experience. To be able to understand many cultural experiences and also communicate with people in German is something that German at ConVal allowed me to have immediately upon my arrival in Austria. The skiing, both on the ski team and with my wonderful friends at ConVal, gave me the idea to ski abroad and the abilities to take advantage of the Alps. My time working with End 68 hours of hunger inspired me to use my marathon to raise money for an amazing cause."
"I would also like to say that I would encourage every student who continues their studies after high school to go abroad. This experience is truly once in a lifetime. No matter where you go, the ability to learn about different cultures and see the world is truly amazing. I would also encourage everyone to work with many of the amazing groups, including End 68 Hours of Hunger, that work with ConVal students. These experiences can be very eye-opening and connect you to our community in a way that truly sticks with you."

On Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9, students from ConVal's Youth & Government program participated in the youth state government session at the State House in Concord. Youth & Government is a co-curricular opportunity that is offered by the high school; Chris Heider is the club's advisor.
Sophomore Gabby Ramsden was elected Chief Justice of the NH Supreme Court. Other ConVal students that took on leadership positions were Wyatt Beaulieu, Eva McCullough, Hayden Kaltsas, and Laramie Wilson. It was a great session with many of the students' bills making it to the full House and Senate for debate.
Youth & Government is a national program of the YMCA that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized, model-government programs. Teens from across every state meet in their local Youth in Government groups throughout the year to discuss and debate issues that affect citizens of their state and to propose legislation. The program culminates with teens serving as delegates at their state conference, debating bills on the floor of the legislature.
The state conference takes place in April and is held at the state capitol of Concord. Here, students have an opportunity to experience state government by electing their own youth officials. Elected officials include the governor, the House Speaker, senate president and chief justice of the supreme court. Other delegates participate as members of the House and Senate, Executive Council, Supreme Court, Lobbyists or Press Corp.
Students are responsible for writing their own legislation prior to arriving in Concord. This legislation is compiled into a billbook from which the work of the House and Senate committees is derived.

Students in Spencer Fetrow's Philosophy class are reading Robert M. Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. One of the goals of the unit is to explore practical applications of philosophical ideas.
To that end, the class previously read an essay based on Matthew Crawford's Shop Class as Soulcraft and discussed the value of the DIY mindset.
As a hands-on project, students were able to put their beliefs into action by repairing flat bicycle tires. After completing the task, the class discussed how they felt about completing the repair themselves, if they felt a closer relationship with the technology, and whether they would elect to pay for a bike shop to complete the service in the future or continue to do the repair on their own.

Interim Assistant Principal Erik Thibault, who joined ConVal High School on Monday, April 4, is very familiar with the school district. A resident of Peterborough, Thibault taught in the ConVal High School mathematics department from 2005-2010. His children are all ConVal graduates.
After a dozen years working in the Milford school district, he considers his return to Peterborough a welcome homecoming. “It’s nice to be back home,” Thibault stated. “It is a good time for me to be at ConVal.” Much of ConVal High School felt immediately familiar to Thibault who also noticed some of the school improvements that had taken place in his years of absence, from the addition to the gymnasium wing to the more recent renovations in the science areas.
Thibault holds an Assistant Principal certification and is working on an educational leadership program to obtain a New Hampshire Administration/Principal certification. “The opening of this position was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with some of the brilliant, compassionate colleagues who molded me into the educator that I am today,” he said, “I am looking forward to the many positive things that are on the horizon.”
Having spent his first full day at the school on Monday, Thibault looks forward to working with the students at ConVal High School: “I consider connecting with students the best part of my job,” he noted.
Welcome back, Mr. Thibault, we all look forward to having you here!

Students in Ben Putnam’s ceramics class learn the art of creating objects by carefully wedging clay, then shaping it with hand-building techniques or using the pottery wheel or extruder.
The completed objects are dried and fired in an electric kiln and finally decorated where different ceramic glazes and painting techniques are employed.
The class was encouraged to experiment and explore forms other than the traditional cylindrical vessels. As Holland Calcutt, a freshman student in the class, explained it, “The ceramics class began a collaborative challenge putting a twist on a teapot form inspired by nature.”
Ceramics is one of the most longest-standing art forms to have emerged in human history. The oldest known ceramic figurine, the so-called "Venus of Dolní Věstonice," traces back to the Czech Republic in 29,000–25,000 BCE, during the Upper Paleolithic period. A 2012 study published in the journal Science confirmed that the earliest known ceramic pots, found in Xianrendong Cave in China’s Jiangxi Province, were made during the height of the Ice Age.
This means that the creation of ceramic objects predates the emergence of agriculture in the Neolithic period by some 10,000 years, and the medium continues to be explored by master potters worldwide today.

While attending ConVal, Alisha Birk (Class of 2015) was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by an internship and the STEM classes that she took during her senior year.
Since graduating from ConVal, Alisha has obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering at Stanford University and is still at Stanford pursuing a medical degree. Her goal is to use scientific innovation to help patients achieve the best care possible.
Here is Alisha's reflection:
"During the summer of my junior year at ConVal, I did an internship at Monadnock Community Hospital with the help of Mrs. O’Neil. This was my first exposure to the world of medicine, and I absolutely loved it. I was able to rotate through the different departments around the hospital, including same-day surgery, radiology, and pediatrics."
"While this experience sparked my journey into medicine, my career path was solidified during my senior year at ConVal when I faced homelessness. In September of 2014, I became homeless due to a domestic violence incident at home, which left me estranged from both of my parents. Luckily, the Andersons have given me a place to stay and call home. I am grateful for their continuous kindness, generosity, and love."
"As a result of my homelessness, I was removed from my parents’ health insurance, and I was unable to seek care when I fell ill in December of that year. I had to learn how to navigate the medical system and apply for health insurance at the age of 17. Luckily, I found myself in a supportive and caring community at ConVal. My guidance counselor, Ms. Knarr, helped me to apply to state Medicaid in between my classes. This experience made me realize how challenging it may be for patients who come from a similar background as me to access the health care they deserve. The health care challenges I faced inspired me to pursue a career in medicine so I could help my patients overcome the challenges they face in their own care."
"I will forever be grateful for the kindness I experienced from Ms. Knarr, the Andersons, and the entire ConVal community when I was going through this difficult time. The support and flexibility from my teachers made a big difference in my life. At the time, I was working two part-time jobs to support myself, while juggling a full-time schedule of AP classes and leading multiple after-school groups, including ConVal Interact, the Math Team, and Spanish Club."
"Due to my limited time outside of school, I would sit in the guidance office with Ms. Knarr and work on my college applications. Without the support of Ms. Knarr, my teachers, the Andersons, and my friends, I may not have had the opportunity to attend Stanford. While at Stanford, I decided to pursue a degree in bioengineering due to an experience I had during my senior year in AP Biology. During our final weeks, we had to watch a TED talk and present the talk to the class. After watching a few, I stumbled upon a talk about a new technique for hip replacement surgery using the patient’s own stem cells. It was eye-opening and inspiring to see innovation changing the way we practice medicine."
"Bioengineering was a perfect fit for me as it allowed me to apply my love for science to medical applications. During my senior year at Stanford, I developed a medical device, called OpticLine, with a few of my classmates as a part of my senior capstone project. OpticLine utilizes optical interrogation methods to detect infection earlier in peritoneal dialysis patients. Peritoneal dialysis patients are at a higher risk of getting an infection since they do dialysis on their own at home. A small mistake like not properly washing your hands can result in touch contamination and infection."
"I would have never aspired to be a physician-scientist if it weren't for the patients I have had the opportunity to interact with along the way. The work I have done with OpticLine has inspired me to work on solving gaps in current medical practice. In April of 2019, my team and I won KidneyX’s Redesign Dialysis Phase 1 prize competition, which is a national innovator accelerator competition for dialysis products. We were invited to speak about our device at the KidneyX Summit in Washington, D.C. At the KidneyX Summit, I was able to talk to patients one-on-one about our device, which was an invaluable experience. Not only were we able to get feedback, but we also were reminded by patients themselves of the importance of our work. My drive towards innovation stems from interactions I have had with these patients; their experiences, concerns, and challenges continue to inspire the work I do. I will continue to use my scientific knowledge and creative thinking skills to solve real-world medical challenges."
"If anyone is interested in learning more about applying to college, applying to medical school, conducting basic science research, or are just simply wanting to chat about life, please feel free to contact me at abirk96@stanford.edu. With the amount of support and guidance I have received along my journey, I am more than happy to help anyone in any way I can."

Students in Cindi Hodgdon’s AP German class had the opportunity to participate in a songwriting workshop with Antje Duvekot recently.
Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Duvekot is a writer, vocalist, and guitarist. She holds three top songwriting awards, including the Kerrville New Folk Competition’s Best New Folk Award, Boston Music Award for Outstanding Folk Act, and Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.
The students worked in groups to create lyrics which required them to properly use similes and metaphors, German figurative language and personification. The final song title was "Irmadillos Traum" ("Irmadillo's Dream").
To see the video of Duvekot performing the song in class — and students' reactions to it —, click here.
The students in AP German were fascinated how, with guidance, they could be so creative in a foreign language. Junior Audrey Lang noted: "It was so fun and our song was wonderful. I hope to hear it on Spotify! It was cool that lyrics I wrote ended up in a class song!"
Senior Sarah Holdredge admired Duvekot's songwriting skills: "She is so talented! It was really cool to see how she could turn our words into a song." Junior Donny Sweeney agreed: "Writing songs with other people is an interesting exercise! There were no negatives - only positives!"
Senior Elli Ward summed up the class activity this way: "Simply put, her music and writing a song with our class makes me happier."
The classroom visit by Antje Duvekot was sponsored by the Goethe Institut of Boston which serves as the German Culture Center for New England. Its mission is to engage schools in the fields of cultural education related to German-speaking countries.

The Contoocook Valley, Jaffrey-Rindge Cooperative and Mascenic School Districts are pleased to announce that the Region 14 Applied Technology Center (ATC) was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from Stanley Black & Decker.
The $10,000 grant is part of Stanley Black & Decker's Empower Makers Global Impact Challenge and will benefit ATC's Construction Trades Program. The grant supports vocational skills training and reskilling programs in the construction and manufacturing sectors.
Funding will be used to expand the Construction Trades Program to include career pathways in the electrical and plumbing fields for the 2022-23 school year.
"This support for the Construction Trades program will have a tangible impact on closing the workforce gap, and we’re grateful to Stanley Black and Decker for their contribution,” Conval Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders said. “Opening career pathways is core to the ATC’s mission and I’m glad that it will benefit from this chance to work toward that goal through this funding.”
According to Stanley Black and Decker, there are 430,000 open construction jobs in the U.S. and 10 million unfilled manufacturing jobs worldwide. This substantial workforce shortage is due to the decline in skilled trade workers. The company estimates that by 2028 there will be three million job openings in skilled trades in the U.S.
"We are so grateful for this funding," Mascenic Superintendent Chris Martin said. "These industries need skilled employees and we will be providing students with the experience and instruction needed to be successful and find jobs with the help of this grant."
Through ATC's Construction Trades Program, students explore several different career paths, while learning foundational skills necessary for those trades. The program currently offers carpentry, masonry and HVAC pathways.
"There will be an even greater demand for skilled trade workers in the next decade, and we are pleased to be doing our part to rebuild the trade workforce," Jaffrey-Rindge Superintendent Reuben Duncan said.
“Stanley Black & Decker is immensely proud to support the ATC as they work to skill and reskill the next generation of trade professionals,” said Stanley Black & Decker Vice President of Social Impact Diane Cantello. “Our purpose is to support ‘Those Who Make the World,’ and being able to fund educational programs and non-profits that are revitalizing trade careers directly connects to our core mission. Thanks to this year’s Makers Grant Recipients, together we will be one step closer to closing the trade skills gap.”

Students in Manufacturing III who are taking advantage of the welding class through the Phaze Welding Technology Center on Vose Farm Road in Peterborough have been working on increasing their skills with stick, mig, and tig welding.
One of the challenges instructor Dan Guillou sets for the students is to create an unbreakable bond between two aluminum cans. More advanced students are also working with the CNC plasma cutter. Senior Steven Van Etten recently created the structure that houses the fire extinguisher on the center’s mobile welding truck.
Students will soon be preparing to participate in a state-wide competition where they can measure their skills against their peers in the state.

Students in Mr. Levesque's Digital Photo I class this week presented their Memento Photo Project for classroom critique.
In this project, students were asked to choose a personally meaningful memento from home — an object with a story behind it. Six pictures of the memento were taken, in different locations and setups, and uploaded to the students' Google Classroom folders.
During the classroom critique, students observed such details about the photos as the creative use of depth of field, imaginative lighting, artistic use of the f-stop, or the use of a "Dutch angle."
The final chosen photo will be uploaded to the student's blog, accompanied by a short story about the importance of this object and the memory it holds.

In the Region 14 ATC Automotive Service Technology program that is held at Mascenic High School, students learn to diagnose, adjust, and repair the various systems of an automobile.
As the automotive teacher Russell Wilson of Mascenic High School shared, “The Region 14 ATC program is providing students with career-driven curriculum to meet the needs of the automotive industries' ever-changing demands."
"In addition to lessons learned about modern automotive technology, we are pleased to announce that an electric vehicle and some classics have been added to the shop. The electric vehicle is designed to be assembled through several easy-to-grasp modules and provide students with the principles necessary to enter into our new clean energy future."
Students develop their skills by also working on older donated vehicles. "Our classics include a 1941 Dodge Power Wagon military truck and a 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air," Wilson continued. "These vehicles give students a glimpse into the history of the automotive industry. The 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air seen in the photographs is getting an engine swap with a period-correct stock replacement. Students are making amazing progress and are learning what it takes to do the job the correct way.”

Chris Stultz, AES Librarian, collaborated with GBS teachers and staff members to set up read aloud sessions for the AES students. While Read Across America is a year long endeavor, March is a time when many schools, such as AES, highlight this celebration. Below you can find some more information about where this comes from and why it is important. We are so proud of our GBS community for participating in this special event to promote reading at the elementary level.
Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA) and guided by a committee of educators, NEA’s Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone.
The titles and resources featured by NEA’s Read Across America include books that students can see themselves reflected in, as well as books that allow readers to see a world or a character that might be different than them.

The ConVal Music Department delighted audience members young and old with a superb Spring Concert on Tuesday. The Chamber Choir, Mixed A Cappella, Contemporary Band, Jazz Band, Select Choir, Concert Choir, and Concert Band all performed a wide-ranging repertoire of traditional, modern, and contemporary music.
Of particular note was the Concert Choir's performance of "Measure Me, Sky!" by Jonathan Reid, a lyrical piece based on the poem by Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Leonora Speyer. Another highlight was the ConVal Band 's rendition of "(Risk) Everything For A Dream," a composition by Richard Saucedo to celebrate United Sound, an organization whose mission it is to remove barriers and foster social change through music by putting instruments into the hands of special needs students (see photos in the slideshow above).
"Our students are truly exceptional!" said Principal McKillop after the concert.

Third-graders at the Pierce Elementary School in Bennington walked the “red carpet” during a special ceremony on Tuesday, March 15, to recognize their hard work in raising baby turtles.
The ceremony also highlighted a special honor: The students and their “Head Starting” program will be featured on New Hampshire PBS on Wednesday, March 16.
Teacher Jenn Sutton’s class is raising four turtles, Penny, Myrtle, Rocky, and Flash. The turtle program is being conducted in collaboration with the Harris Center for Conservation Education and the N.H. Fish and Game Department.
Students dressed up for the ceremony, during which they received trophies and certificates. Ms. Sutton also dressed up in her special turtle hat.
Many special guests attended. Susie Spikol, a naturalist at the Harris Center, explained the important job the third graders had and shared when the turtles will be released. She also shared turtle facts and read a poem.
Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Rizzo Saunders attended as well to congratulate the students. And Bennington Bear participated, wearing a turtle shell.
Students are following Zoo New England’s protocols for caring for the turtles, and will release them in May.
Principal Beth Gibney's message to the school was: "Hard work and patience can change the world!"
The story will air online during “Windows to the Wild,” on Wednesday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. on NHPBS. To view it at that time, please click this link: www.nhpbs.org/windows. We are so proud of the work the students have been doing this year with the turtles, and can't wait to see the segment!
We would like to thank members of the Pierce Elementary School PTO who provided popcorn for the celebration.

While attending ConVal, Palmer Timmons (Class of 2018) developed a keen interest in the technical programs offered at the Region 14 Applied Technology Center (ATC), especially the engineering and robotics courses. After working closely with the teachers in these courses, he started looking into the unmanned aircraft industry and what opportunities were open to him.
Since graduating from ConVal, Timmons has attended the University of North Dakota, known for its world-renowned aviation program. He is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautics, Dual Majoring in Commercial Aviation and High Altitude Unmanned Aircraft Systems.
Timmons is employed as a Certified Flight Instructor at UND Flight Operations and is currently in training to become an Instrument Instructor and Multi-Engine Instructor.
Here is Palmer's reflection:
"The second half of my time at ConVal was spent trying to complete as many technical/STEM classes as possible. I finished the entire engineering curriculum, including an independent study involving modeling aircraft using CAD and CNC machines. I got involved in the programming classes and dabbled in robotics."
"The various projects I completed in these classes helped me explore unmanned aircraft technologies after I had already been interested in flying airplanes for many years. These interests led me to go to the University of North Dakota where I could pursue a degree with a major in each of these areas."
"In my first year, I was able to earn my Private Pilot Certificate, allowing me to fly on my own whenever and just about wherever I want. Continuing on, and studying hard to ensure I did not fail any check rides, I finished my junior year by earning my Commercial Pilot Certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings."
"At the same time, I worked with highly advanced drone aircraft, such as the Insitu Scan Eagle and the General Atomics MQ-1 Predator which was a relatively easy skill set to adapt to after receiving excellent training in programming and coding at ConVal."
"By far my favorite experience has been flying aerobatics. After earning my tailwheel rating and getting involved in various events, I was able to get a spot practicing with the Aerobatics Team. After lots of training, I was able to compete in my first aerobatics competition with a flight that earned the second-highest score in my category. The entire competition was a truly unparalleled experience."
"During my senior year, I reached my most challenging and significant achievement to date and became a Certified Flight Instructor. The following semester, I was selected for a class 50 out of over 300 applicants to be hired on by UND Flight Ops as a Flight Instructor, which has been my job ever since."
"The concept of becoming a pilot was something that never seemed like a realistic, attainable goal until I was actually getting into flight training. I imagine there are plenty of high school students in the same position as I was. I encourage them to talk to me if they are interested in becoming a professional pilot, or look into local flight schools and book a discovery flight."
If you are interested in getting in touch with Palmer, you can reach him at palmer.timmons@und.edu.

Dear parents of ANY South Meadow School Student that would like to play a 2022 spring sport, or club sport at South Meadow School, starting March 28, 2022.
My name is Tod Silegy and I am starting my 22nd year at South Meadow School as Physical Education Teacher, Athletic Director, and Boys Soccer Coach and Girls Softball Coach.
To play a sport at the high school level or middle school level in the ConVal district, ALL athletes must take the Initial Impact Concussion Test. This test is not a competition and there is no score, but the test does create a baseline for each athlete’s brain when it is healthy.
Hopefully this will not happen, but if your child does receive a concussion that is verified by your primary care physician while playing a sport for SMS, your child would have to sit out practices and games until your primary care physician clears your child to resume participating. Once the primary care physician clears your child to resume play, your child would have to take the Post-Concussion Impact test. The Post-Concussion Impact Test would then be compared to your child’s Initial Impact Test Baseline, and if it compares well, your child would be allowed to resume play for SMS.
Please have your child take the Initial Impact Test at home, BEFORE March 28th.
Below is the link to take the Initial Impact Test. Your child should be in a quiet place that will be undisturbed until completed. Click on the link, then put in the Impact Test Code, then follow the prompts until you get to the “start test.”
Ideally a parent should help your child get through the first part of the test’s demographics. The test asks for name, birthdate, etc., but also questions about ADD, headaches, dizziness etc. My experience tells me many student athletes are not sure how to answer these questions. After the test is started, your child should be able to handle the test on their own.
In the end you do not have to do any emailing of results. Just sign out.
All information goes to and is stored in the ConVal Athletic Initial Impact Test data base.
This test is good for any other sport your child would like to play throughout their year at SMS, and the test is good for two years.

Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders and School Board Chair Tim Theberge wish to thank voters in the nine towns that comprise the district for their support in passing the district's Fiscal Year 2023 budget and a series of warrant articles yesterday.
"Taken together, the budget and warrant articles advanced by the board and approved by voters represent a strong commitment by the district to support students of all ages through robust programming, as well as the retention and recruitment of excellent educators," Theberge said. "On behalf of the board, I want to thank voters for their overwhelming support of these guiding principles, which will help ConVal build on its successes and look ahead to a strong future."
Each of the board-sponsored articles passed by a margin of 60 percent or more, paving the way for an expanded public preschool program, as well as a fully-funded operating budget for the coming fiscal year. Voters also widely supported a new collective bargaining agreement between the district and the ConVal Education Association.
The new collective bargaining agreement will run for three years, beginning this summer, and calls for step salary increases for years of experience for classroom teachers, pay raises for paraprofessionals serving as substitutes, a 0.5% annual increase in employee healthcare contributions and the establishment of a fund for repayment of employee student loans. The new agreement will result in cost increases of $877,844 in year one, $737,576 in year two and $714,868 in the final year.

In a further return to ConVal traditions, the all-school assembly on March 4 featured the Unified vs Faculty basketball game which had been suspended for two years due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The game got off to a fast start with both teams scoring points, including some 3-pointers. During each of the four playing periods, there were multiple rotations which gave everyone on the Unified and the faculty sides opportunities to play.
The game ended with a close final score of 44-40 in favor of the Unified Team.

by Janine Lesser Vice Chairman, ConVal School Board
It’s that time of year--time to vote on the ConVal school budget. The day is March 8th in your local polling place. All households in the nine towns in our regional school district will receive the annual flyer with the budget and the warrant articles, and information on your voting locations and times.
We all know it’s crucial we make good decisions. If you have children enrolled in the district schools, if you are a community-oriented person who believes in investing in our children, or if you are simply thinking about real estate values and taxes-the school budget vote makes us sit up and pay attention. But the issues are complicated, and straight forward, understandable facts can sometimes be hard to come by. The ConVal School Board would like to offer some information that we believe is important to your decision. The Board has posted a series of articles on the ConVal website, under the School Board link on the budget development process. The information includes the proposed 2022-23 budget, a PowerPoint on the proposed budget, the warrant, a sample ballot, an explanation of the trust funds, the proposed teacher contract (collective bargaining agreement), and information on how property taxes are determined. You can find that information here: https://schoolboard.convalsd.net/budget/. Here is a link to the January 25th Community Forum, whose two topics were the 2022-23 budget and the PreK for All warrant article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWR78WOKlnU. You can also contact your school board representative with questions, those representatives are also listed under the school board link.
This year has seen the usual host of challenges, but with the addition of a sustained effort to manage the ongoing effects of COVID19, and a sustained effort to withstand a host of detrimental pieces of legislation and decisions coming from Concord. ConVal is developing its next five-year strategic plan, with an eye on recovering from the effects of the last two years, and using the lessons learned to move forward. Our communities have done a fine job of providing input, and still have opportunities to weigh in via focus groups. The draft plan will be available for community feedback.
Our schools continued to gain recognition and awards despite these challenges: Linda Compton, school nurse at Antrim Elementary School, was nominated for the “National Life Changer of the Year” award and Cindi Hodgdon was recognized with the “Outstanding German Educator” award by a national organization. The Region 14 Applied Technology Center at ConVal hosted a open house for close to 600 regional students and community members over the past week. The high school students earned 40 awards in the 2022 Scholastic Art Awards competition. ConVal Theatre Arts is alive and well with their stage production of “Frozen: Kids.” The ConVal athletics program has earned many achievements, including the unified basketball, boys basketball, soccer. Our elementary and middle schools sponsor many family and community involvement activities year-round.
The budget for which we are asking support is conservative: the operating budget has a .65% increase over the current year’s budget. The warrant articles include a new three-year teacher contract that the School Board fully supports as fair to the teachers and staff, and to taxpayers. Another warrant article requests the funds to expand the PreK For All program to the final three classrooms, giving the district the ability to accommodate all preschool children in a play-based program.
In the face of declining state revenues, the school board fully recognizes both its responsibility to tax payers and to the children and families of these nine communities. The need for an education that prepares our students for the rigors of independent and informed decisions and action in our democracy have never been greater. The Board is fully invested in comprehensively addressing one of our most pressing problems—managing the cost of education while maintaining excellence and equity in education for all students. We hope that you agree and vote yes for the budget.

The ConVal School Board’s Strategic Planning Committee invites community members to participate in focus groups to help the ConVal School District develop a new strategic plan.
The nine focus groups will gather input about long-term strategies and goals that are most important to community members. Feedback collected will help the District to shape a strategic plan that reflects community priorities.
Focus groups are open to all stakeholders – parents/guardians, students, staff, and residents of ConVal’s nine sending communities.
“We thank the many community members who have shown interest and who have shared their ideas through the strategic planning process thus far,” said School Board Chair Tim Theberge. “The feedback of families, students, staff and residents is vital in developing a plan that aligns with community priorities. We ask for their continued help through these focus groups."
Community members can sign up for one of the following sessions:
Monday, March 7: 3:30-4:45 p.m., 5:00-6:15 p.m., or 6:30-7:45 p.m.
Tuesday, March 8: 3:30-4:45 p.m., 5:00-6:15 p.m., or 6:30-7:45 p.m.
Thursday, March 17 (virtual): 3:30-4:45 p.m., 5:00-6:15 p.m., or 6:30-7:45 p.m.
Space is limited, so those interested should register early. To register, please click here.
Strategic plans act as a roadmap for the District to follow during a five-year period, highlighting specific projects and goals for long-term sustainable growth. The most recent strategic plan was created in 2016 and lasted through June 2021.
A draft of the strategic plan is expected to be completed by June 2022. The plan will be reviewed by the School Board and implemented after approval.

The 2021-2022 Spirit Week took place the week before February break. The Junior class of 2023 were the victors overall, with points that have been accumulating from competitions between classes all year.
In previous years, Spirit Week had typically been hosted the week before April vacation, so this year was full of many changes! ConVal Games, SALT-hosted games, Penny Wars, door decorating, and other assemblies and fun, spirited competitions have occurred throughout this year leading up to spirit week festivities.
The competition was very close between the current Sophomore and Junior classes, with Seniors in third place.
The Annual Penny War competition ended up raising $282.10 in donations. The Freshman class won Penny Wars with 20+ pounds of change. As the victors, they chose to donate the money to New Hampshire Tackles Hunger.

Today, 2nd grade had some very special visitors to their classrooms! In conjunction with one of the reading units on service and therapy dogs, they had a therapy dog and trainer visit! Melissa and Canyon, from ColdSprings Healing Paws, joined the classroom this morning so students could see and learn firsthand what it takes to train a therapy or service dog. Students asked great questions, got to see Canyon do some jobs, and those that wanted to, got to give him many pets. One of the facts that the students were very impressed by is that Canyon had to train for over 10,000 hours to be a therapy dog! Melissa also trains service dogs and the students learned that they live with her, training, for 22 months before they are able to go with the owner who needs them. It is always such a pleasure for me to bring real life experiences to the classroom for the students. The kids were amazing and so engaged the whole time our visitors were here. It was amazing the calm that was over the room while Canyon was here. Thank you to ColdSprings Healing Paws for coming!

ConVal Wrestling competed in the D3 state tournament at Bow High School yesterday.
Teams were allowed to enter one wrestler at each weight class. ConVal took fourth as a squad. The top three finishers from each weight class qualified for the Meet of Champions for next Saturday in Londonderry.
ConVal had 4 qualifiers:
Max Vassar took 3rd at 126 lbs
Cam Jordan took 3rd 132 lbs
Trace Borozinski took 2nd at 285 lbs
And Chris Robbins was again the D3 champion (at 145 lbs in 2020 and at 170 lbs in 2022)
This is an outstanding finish for the team, considering last season was Covid canceled.
The top three finishers this weekend at the Meet of Champs will qualify for New Englands.

After being held virtually last year, Spirit Week returned to in-person activities at ConVal High School this past week.
Classes competed for theme days throughout the week. There were dress-up theme days: Valentine's Day outfits, "Adam Sandler Day," "Inside Out Day," "Fancy Dress Day," Class Color Day, and Blue & Gold Day. There were penny wars, and TASC homerooms competed with door decorations to show off some school spirit.
Spirit Week ended with rallies in the gym. Freshmen and sophomores were vying for points on Thursday while juniors and seniors competed on Friday. There was something in the program for everyone: a game of musical chairs, a scooter race, a hula hoop contest, tug-of-war, and half-court basketball shots.
Right in the middle of the rally, students competed in the learning of ConVal's fight song, which hadn't been heard during the pandemic.
The competition between classes was so close! The winning class will be announced over the intercom the morning we return from our February vacation.
Thank you to all of our students and staff that participated during this week to make the building colorful and full of energy and excitement. Thank you to everyone on Student Council for the great planning. Thank you to Anna Muncy, Bethany Cooper, John Reitnauer, and to the class advisors who helped organize Spirit Week. Thank you to all the staff members who participated — there were some great outfits for dress-up days in the front office, the library, and among many of the classroom teachers and paraprofessionals. And a special thank you to the Harris' (Alexis and Matt) for emceeing the gym rallies to make them exciting spirit events.
