On May 31, more than 60 ConVal seniors took a field trip to Fenway Park to participate in the Red Sox' "Class of 2023" theme night. The Sox lost narrowly to the Cincinnati Reds with a score of 5-4 but the loss did not curb the enthusiasm of the sold-out stadium crowd.
In addition to doing one last activity as a class before graduation, the seniors received a commemorative, limited edition Red Sox "Class of 2023" T-shirt. Congratulations everyone, including the class advisors Rebecca Dunn and Ashley Jones who organized this great senior trip!

Each year from June 1-7, National CPR and AED Awareness Week stresses the importance of CPR and AED use. When someone goes into sudden cardiac arrest, every second counts.
Robyn Birren, Director for School Engagement at the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Heart Association, recently visited ConVal to bring to the Careers in Education Program a train-the-trainer kit to help support "CPR In Schools," an initiative created by the American Heart Association in partnership with Dartmouth Health. "We hope that you will find this kit useful for years to come with your school and community," Birren said.
More than 1,600 people suffer from cardiac arrest each day in the U.S. Knowing CPR and how to use an AED could save their life. Or to put it in an even more personal perspective â someone next to you knowing these skills may save yours.

As an immersive language experience, the Spanish Department at ConVal Regional High School is in the early planning stages of a student trip to Spain in the spring of 2024. The tour is designed for students who are upper-level students (grades 10 and up) and have completed Spanish 2 by the end of fall semester 2023.
This will be a unique opportunity for students to explore the rich culture and history of this fascinating country. The tour will take them to the capital Madrid where they will witness the vibrant Spanish lifestyle firsthand while exploring the city's famous landmarks such as the Royal Palace, the Prado Museum, and the Puerta del Sol. The trip will also include a tour of the Andalusia region in the south, where students will experience the enchanting beauty of historic towns such as Seville, Granada, Ronda, and the Pueblos Blancos, the white villages nestled among the hills in the Andalusian mountains. The tour will give students the chance to learn about the country's rich cultural heritage while practicing their Spanish skills and making unforgettable travel memories.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please attend an orientation session on June 1, 2023 at 6:00 pm in the ConVal library. Questions? Please contact SeĂąora Pacheco-McMahon at vmcmahon@conval.edu.

Your School Board has formed the Strategic Organization Committee (SOC) to embark on an open, transparent, community-involved review to completely analyze our physical environment.
The goal of this committee is to determine the best possible, educationally rich, safe, socially responsive, community sensitive, financially responsible, and organizationally sound physical model while providing for enhanced diversity and cultural understanding in support of our ConVal community and students.
ConVal supports 11 physically separate schools: eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Our school population has been on a steadily decreasing track with ConVal now having approximately 1,993 students with a capacity for 3,530 students as of November 2022. Our school capacity far exceeds our current enrollment, and enrollment is not expected to significantly increase in the foreseeable future. The latest demographic projections suggest a very small growth in enrollments over the next decade.
We are in the process of selecting an outside organization that is experienced with activities like this from working with other school districts and states. The selected organization will provide their expertise and assist us in this project. We have issued a Request for Information, received replies, selected three organizations to receive our Request for Proposal and will shortly select our partner organization.
The key to this process will be community engagement. We will have as involved partners in our committee: community members, parents and students, Select Board members, School Board members, ConVal District Administration, teachers, and staff.
The SOC will be holding Community Forums and individual community meetings to share, discuss and receive input. We will produce a report detailing the committeeâs work and determined proposals in proposing a redesign for the district.
There can be more than one viable approach recommended. Any change to the number of active elementary schools will require a 2/3 public vote to amend our Articles of Agreement.
We expect this critical activity will take approximately 6 months to complete once we select and engage our partner organization.
It is important to note that we do not enter into this activity with a preconceived notion of what, if anything, should be done. We proceed with open minds fulfilling our mandate to provide the most educationally rich, cost-effective, safe, and responsive environment for our students and community.

Things That Go âVROOM!â PES-ConVal High School Collaboration
Students from Peterborough Elementary Schoolâs third grade and students in a ConVal High School 3D art class recently worked together to contribute to the Children and the Arts Festival in a unique collaboration.
The third graders furnished drawings based on this yearâs Festival theme âThings That Go VROOM!â The high school students then created three-dimensional renditions based on the elementary schoolersâ concepts. Their joint creations can currently be seen in an exhibit at the Peterborough Town Library.

On Tuesday, May 16, ConVal's Envirothon Team took a field trip to the New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) in Concord to participate in the New Hampshire Envirothon competition. The competition tests the students' knowledge in such areas as forestry, soil and land use, wildlife, aquatic ecology, and current environmental issues.
"This year, we sent two competing teams of five members each," said Andria Johnson, the advisor for the Envirothon co-curricular. "They had a great time! At the end, before awards, they did a little senior sendoff and gave them all honor cords."
The photos show ConVal Envirothon team members at the wildlife station where they had to identify animal pelts, scat, and tracks. Each team also had to give an oral presentation regarding climate change and how we adapt.
Since 1991, the New Hampshire Envirothon has supported student growth and inquiry in Environmental Science, Natural Resource conservation, and STEM education under the direction of the New Hampshire Association of Conservation Districts (NHACD).

On Friday, May 12, the ConVal High School Band and Choir, GBS Band, and SMS Band all performed at the Great East Music Festival. 132 music students between the three schools left early Friday morning for East Hampton, MA, where they performed for adjudicators. All four ensembles received gold medal ratings! The ensembles were rated on their tone/intonation, technique, musicianship, and overall effectiveness.
The SMS 7th and 8th-grade band went first performing "Remember Me" from Coco and "Pueblo, Land of Ancient Peoples" by John Higgins. Edward Lowy said about his Band, "It was an all-around complete performance."
Great Brook School's 7th and 8th grade band performed two pieces titled, "(Risk) Everything For A Dream" and "Black Forest Overture." "(Risk) Everything For A Dream" had a wonderful lyrical setting and "Black Forest Overture" featured a few soloists. The GBS 7th and 8th graders showed up ready to perform and they definitely delivered!
The ConVal Band performed James Swearingen's "Aventura" and a medley from Disney/Pixar's "Brave." One of the adjudicators told the Band how much he enjoyed the energy from their performance.
The ConVal Choir closed the performance with Coldplay's "Fix You" and Jacob Narverud's "Ad Astra." The Choir was heavily complimented on their repertoire.

Just as a reminder every year, New Hampshire public and charter school are required by state law (RSA 193-C) and federal accountability laws to assess students using standardized assessment.
South Meadow School will be testing on the following days:
Tuesday, May 16th
Thursday, May 18th
Friday, May 19th
Tuesday, May 23rd
In order to ensure the success of our students, we are asking parents to be sure their students have charged their chromebooks, have had a good breakfast, are well rested, and ready to test. If you could also be sure they have a pencil and something they could read or have a quiet activity in case they complete the tests early we would greatly appreciate it.

On Saturday, the Ocean Bowl team traveled to Rye where they spent the morning exploring tide pools at Odiorne State Park.
They observed several crabs, shrimp, mussels, barnacles, periwinkle and dog whelk snails, and a larval fish.
After a picnic lunch and a visit to the Seacoast Science Center, the group picked up trash on Rye Beach.
âThis was such a fun experience. It was great to see the animals and ecosystems that weâve been talking about all year,â said sophomore Amanda Bergeron. âPicking up trash was so satisfying!â added Maeve Finn. âIt feels good to know youâre making a difference.â

Four ConVal student films have been selected for screening at the 2023 New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival. The Festival will open on Sunday, May 21, at 11:30 am, with screening starting 12:30 pm at Chunky's Cinema in Manchester. Admission is free.
The following student films were accepted for screening:
"Avian Automatons" by Trent Stafford
"Chasing The Past" by Jennifer Hopkins
"In My Mind" by Ethan Marony
"Peterborough Fire and Rescue" by Francisco Jaimes
The selection of these movie shorts means that the films have made the first cut on their way to potentially receiving an award. All film nominations, regardless of type or genre, were judged on the filmmakersâ ability to effectively captivate their audience through the craft and art of cinematic expression. Originality, cinematic storytelling, and technical execution were the basis of the scoring of this stage in the competition.
Launched in 2008 and presented by the New Hampshire Film and Television Office, the New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival has become one of the marquee film festivals in the state, fostering interest in filmmaking, supporting media arts education in schools, and rewarding future members of the industry for their craft.

Over April break, ConVal science teacher Carol Young completed an 8-day Teacher Fellowship in Costa Rica. Young joined 14 other science educators from across the United States and Canada to learn about ecological research methods and inquiry-based instructional models. The fellowship was a unique professional development opportunity provided by the nonprofit organization Ecology Project International (EPI).
Katherine Mena and Raquel Bone Guzman, EPI instructors and native Costa Ricans, led the fellows in a variety of team building, data analysis, and nature observation activities. The group spent five days at Pacuare on the Caribbean coast and another two days inland at Tirimbina Biological Reserve in Sarapiqui.
On rainforest hikes, there were opportunities to observe toucans, poison dart frogs, and a resident crocodile. "The most amazing thing, though, was the tortugas," Young noted. Every night, the fellows were divided into three patrol groups. Led by one of Pacuareâs research assistants, each group hiked a 4 kilometer stretch of beach for four hours.
During their patrol they looked for female leatherback sea turtles, or tortugas, making their nests on the beach. When they spotted one, the fellows helped the research assistant measure the width and length of the tortugaâs carapace as well as its neck circumference. They also measured the depth of the nesting hole. As the tortuga released her eggs, a research assistant or fellow caught them in a bag.
The eggs were then carried to the hatchery, where they were buried at the same depth as the tortugaâs nest. âI felt so humbled and honored to be in the presence of these ancient creatures as they started their next generation,â Young said.
For more on the fellowship program and the research that was conducted, please see here.

Our school is about to take part in a special, communitywide shared reading event. Every family will receive a copy of the same book, âFenway and Hattieâ by Victoria Coe. Your family will be asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks*.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With this program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone â students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff â will all be following along together.
Your child received a copy of âFenway and Hattieâ today at a special school-wide assembly introducing the program and the book. Funds from our Title One grant paid for books for each student. Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. Monday and Wednesday chapters will be read aloud at school. Alternate weekday chapters will be read at home.
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. Nightly discussion questions will also be posted on the schoolâs Facebook page. In class, students will explore the book through activities and discussion. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so that your child can be included.
When a whole school reads a book, thereâs a lot to talk about. With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.
Thank you for your participation!

On April 12th, ConVal School Board member and Vietnam Veteran Dick Dunning â who is also a Civil War Reenactor â visited David Allenâs Social Studies class to provide some unique insights into the daily life of a Union soldier. The artifacts, history and enthusiasm that he brought to the students was truly impactful as was evident from the recap of his visit later in the week. The eighth grade headed off on the AHT and to Gettysburg with a firmer grasp of the realities that took place there thanks to Mr. Dunning.

On Friday, Systems Administrator Kevin Carne and ATC Director Jen Kiley provided a demonstration in drone flying on the ConVal athletic fields. The drone they used is an ANAFI Parrot, a foldable quadcopter with a 4K HDR 21 MP camera that supports up to 25 minutes of filmed flight time.
After listening carefully to the operating instructions, Assistant Principal Rick Simoneau and Technology Integration Specialist Helfried Zrzavy each took turns trying out the drone which proved relatively easy to operate and surprisingly stable in flight, despite some wind gusts.
The goal is to offer ConVal High School students a co-curricular opportunity that is devoted to drone flying, with instruction leading to a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA. This certificate demonstrates that the pilot understands the regulations, operating requirements, and procedures for safely flying drones.
In addition to recreational flights, drone piloting skills can have practical career applications for students who complete the requirements for the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate. According to Zip Recruiter, "drone pilot" and "commercial drone pilot" are commonly searched positions in the current job market. The primary responsibilities of a drone pilot are to control and maintain an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
Drone pilot positions are available with both the military and other governmental organizations, as well as private companies, such as agricultural operations, environmental scientists, film and television production companies, surveyors, and GIS mapping specialists. Drone pilots can expect to make $34,000-$70,000 annually.

Friday was the last full day that the ConVal exchange students were able to spend with their partners and host families in Salzburg.
"This morning, we changed our plans from a nature day to a town day because of the forecast - we are glad we did because it really poured today," Frau Hodgdon reported. "We headed to the 'Haus der Natur' which is a really excellent science museum. They had exhibits on everything from space to the art of taxidermy, mineralogy to dragons." One room contained a collection of "Schiachperchten" ("ugly perchten"), scary masks carved of wood and adorned with horns. The masks are worn by scary furry creatures with loud cow bells and whipping rods in the centuries-old tradition of "Krampus" runs on December 5.
"Then we all scattered to go home to pack, take naps, and squeeze some last fun in. Finally, we headed up the mountain to the Gaisberg for our farewell dinner. Jen, Danielle, Maeve, and Eva all gave wonderful speeches about how meaningful their time here was."
"Fritz Baier reminded me tonight that a tourist brings back souvenirs, a traveler brings back stories," Frau Hodgdon concluded. Addressing the parents of ConVal exchange students directly, she continued: "I hope you will have plenty of stories and pictures and this truly is just the beginning of your student's adventures abroad. We don't think tonight was an end, but a start to further adventures."

On Thursday, the tour of the ConVal exchange students started on a somber historical note but ended with a fun exploration of a German amusement park.
"We started the day visiting Dachau, the former concentration camp," Frau Hodgdon reported. Established in 1933 about a half-hour ride northwest of Munich, Dachau served as a model for other concentration camps that were later established throughout Nazi Germany. The camp became infamous for the atrocities committed against prisoners, primarily political dissidents, homosexuals, Jews, and other minority groups considered undesirable by the Nazi regime. The camp was also used for medical experimentation and served as a training ground for SS personnel who would later staff other concentration camps.
"It is a heavy place meant for contemplation and I am glad we started the day this way. German students are required by law to visit a concentration camp with school and I am glad students got to see something they had only read about," Frau Hodgdon noted. The school visits to concentration camps are part of Germany's "Vergangeheitsbewältigung," a continuing, national effort of confronting and coping with the country's World War II past.
The next stop was a tour of downtown Munich and the Marienplatz to have lunch and get some shopping done. "After that, we went to the BMW World, which is like a showroom for all of the BMW products including the Mini, Rolls Royce, and all their motorcycles," Frau Hodgdon continued.
"Next we headed to the Olympic Park and went up the Olympic Tower where we had a great view of the city. Finally, we headed to the 'FrĂźhlingsfest,' which is a smaller version of Oktoberfest, just in the spring. The kids had a great time and were interested in the comparisons between German and American carnivals."
"Throughout the day, various students were in charge of getting us from one point to another and they did a great job navigating subway, bus, and train maps."

On Wednesday, the ConVal students who are participating in the Salzburg Exchange Program this year got to attend classes at the Akademisches Gymnasium (Academic High School) where they participated in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade classes in small groups of 4 or 5.
The Akademisches Gymnasium was founded in 1617 as a preparatory school for the University of Salzburg by Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. The school's century-old mission is to prepare students specifically for university studies with a strong commitment to Humboldt's ideal of education â graduates are to become self-determining individuals and world citizens by developing independent reasoning powers in an environment of academic freedom.
As Frau Hodgdon reported: "Today was a very special day because we got to see what Austrian school is like. We visited a range of classes, each 45 minutes in length: ancient Greek, Latin, German, History, Mathematics, Art, French, English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology. The students found the comparison between cultures to be very interesting!"
After their day at school, our students visited Hellbrunn Palace, an early Baroque villa of palatial size, near Morzg, a southern district of the city of Salzburg. The original owner was Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, the same Prince-Archbishop who founded the Akademisches Gymnasium. Sittikus built the villa in 1613â19 and named it for the "Hellbrunn" (clear spring) that supplied it.
People familiar with the movie The Sound of Music will recognize Hellbrunn Palace for its trick fountains which Frau Hodgdon considered "pretty incredible engineering for the time!" The castle grounds also contain the movie's famous gazebo where Liesel and Rolf sing â16 Going On 17â and where Captain von Trapp and Maria perform their romantic duet, âSomething Good.â
"Before heading home to their host families, a few students went 'kneippen,' which is an Austrian health program that involves walking in frigid water while meditating," Frau Hodgdon noted. The loosely structured late afternoon program had some students try Sachertorte, have dinner at an Italian restaurant, while a third group visited Mozart's birthplace in the center of Salzburg.

On Tuesday, ConValâs exchange students traveled to the Imperial City of Vienna. The students got to explore the inner city's pedestrian zone with its boutique shops and the Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral) at its center. The 12th-century cathedral took more than 440 years to complete and is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, featuring stunning stained glass windows and a 450-foot south tower with intricate sandstone carvings.
They also visited Hofburg Palace, the once principal residence of the Habsburg monarchs, the Spanish Riding School with its 400-year tradition of raising and training the white Lippizaner horses, as well as the Nationalbibliothek (National Library) with its high-ceilinged State Hall and over 200,000 rare and historical texts among its total collection of 12 million books, manuscripts, and other cultural artifacts.
Students were also fascinated by the Albertina Museum in the heart of Vienna. The museum's collection includes over one million works of art from the late Gothic period to contemporary art, among them drawings, etchings, and prints by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Albrecht DĂźrer, Raphael, and Rembrandt. The museum also has a strong collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Egon Schiele, and Andy Warhol. On the Naschmarkt, Vienna's largest and most popular outdoor market, students got to see a wide variety of traditional Viennese foods and drinks.
As Frau Hodgdon reported: "It was a mega long day in Vienna, leaving school at 7:30 this morning and returning at 10:15 pm. But boy, did we see a lot! The kids were certainly troopers today - we walked about 10 miles in all kinds of weather today and they are exhausted!" She especially appreciated the tour guiding skills of Fritz Baier, the exchange program contact at the Akademisches Gymnasium in Salzburg: "The whole time, Fritz regaled us with stories about Vienna - we are lucky to have such a walking fountain of knowledge with us!"

On Monday, ConVal's contingent of exchange students traveled to The Hallein Salt Mine, an underground salt mine located in the DĂźrrnberg plateau above Hallein, Austria. The mine has been worked for over 2,600 years and was a main contributor to the economic and political rise of the city of Salzburg whose name literally translates as "salt castle."
As Frau Hodgdon reported, "We had a great day traveling to Hallein to see the salt mines. We had a fantastic tour of what a real salt mine used to look like and how salt was produced. It was awesome being underground, in tunnels, traveling in by train car, sliding down giant slides, having a boat ride, and a tour guide who explained everything in three languages!"
In addition to the exploration of the salt mine nearly 700 feet underground and almost 4,000 feet away from the entrance, students got to cross an international border underground (see photo below).
Another key takeaway of the day: one has to learn to negotiate the public transportation system with care and watch out for people on the bike paths!

The ConVal students who are on their trip to Germany and Austria had a busy day on Friday. It was mostly a day of travel and then the group dispersed among a few small-group destinations.
The highlight of the day was that our students reunited with their partners, the students whom they had hosted in October of last year.
Our students will spend a fun weekend with their host families and get to know Salzburg! The weather is still a bit more wintry than the 80-degree temperatures they had experienced ahead of the trip, and despite an early bloom in Salzburg, there is now a fresh layer of snow into the low altitudes of the Alps, as the last picture shows.

In honor of Earth Day (April 22), the National Honor Society hosted a campus clean-up for students who were passionate about making our school grounds and community a cleaner place.
Eighteen students participated in the trash cleanup. They filled over 4 large trash bags during their sweep of the campus grounds and popular trail.
Students hope to make this an annual tradition at ConVal and increase participation next year!
Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events, including cleanups. The official theme for 2023 is "Invest In Our Planet."

Our sleep patterns are largely determined by our internal biological clock â some people naturally wake up early and feel more alert in the morning, while others are more active at night and struggle to get up in the morning. These individual differences are referred to as chronotypes, and they are thought to be influenced by genetics. In Anne Clifton-Waite's AP Biology Class, students learned how to use DNA analysis to determine whether someone is a morning lark or night owl.
The DNA analysis involves examining specific genetic markers, in this case the PER3 gene which has two variants: a long allele and a short allele. Individuals with the long allele tend to be morning types, while those with the short allele are more likely to be night owls.
To conduct the DNA analysis, a sample of DNA is usually collected using a non-invasive method such as a cheek swab or saliva sample. The DNA is then sequenced, and specific genetic markers are examined to determine the individual's chronotype.
The procedure that students in the class learned to employ is the PCR, or polymerase chain reaction. This laboratory technique involves three main steps â denaturation, annealing, and extension. The steps are repeated multiple times in a cycle, with each cycle doubling the number of copies of the target DNA sequence. 30 cycles were performed, resulting in millions of copies of the target sequence for analysis.
Gel electrophoresis was then used to visualize the results. By analyzing the ladders that developed as the result of electrophoresis and looking for tell-tale band separation markers, students were able to determine whether their genetic proclivity tended towards being a night owl or a morning lark, or somewhere in between.
As Anne Clifton-Waite stressed to the class, while DNA analysis can provide valuable insights into an individual's sleep preferences, it is important to note that genetics is not the only factor that influences chronotype. Environmental factors, such as exposure to light and social habits, also play a role. A video she showed also emphasized an individual's chronotype can change over time, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood.
Our sleep patterns are largely determined by our internal biological clock â some people naturally wake up early and feel more alert in the morning, while others are more active at night and struggle to get up in the morning.

Sam Winslow's Statistics classes during first and third blocks found themselves out on the athletic fields on Friday in pursuit of statistical data generation and analysis.
Winslow had set up ten different stations which asked students to complete tasks such as pulling a rope hand-over-hand, stacking cups, putting together puzzles, and throwing dice. Students measured their completion times or how frequently events occurred, such as any one of the dice coming up with the number 6.
The aim of this exercise in applied statistics was to generate data in a fun way and to use them for statistical concepts, such as tendency (mean, median, mode), variability (range, variance, standard deviation), and others. Students analyzed the data in terms of in-class comparisons between students and established comparisons with the respective other section of the course.
"Collecting data to make statistical comparisons of two different sections of Statistics students was the best way to illustrate the complete workflow from data generation to analysis," said Winslow.

Students in the 4th block class worked as a team to build a 5-meter long wave machine out of gumdrops, bamboo skewers, and duct tape.
Students got to experiment with the device to model wave properties such as amplitude, energy, speed, and frequency.
This was a super fun team-building and modeling activity, and the class truly rallied together to build, modify, and play with the wave generator.

Some of Temple Elementary School's third and fourth-grade students are participating in a monthly cooking club.
This past week they prepared Thai spring rolls. The students peeled, chopped, stirred, cooked, filled, and rolled spring rolls. With the help of the adults, the spring rolls were fried and enjoyed. The students said they were delicious. Now, to get them to cook enough for the staff too.
We are so thankful for this opportunity that is offered by Cornucopia to the students of Temple Elementary.

The third and fourth-grade students learned about sound and how it travels.
Students are exploring the role that air plays in enabling a sound vibration to travel. In the activity, Act Out a Sound, students do two short experiments that explore sound vibrations. Students experiment with sound to understand how it moves through the air and then consider what would happen in an environment like space, where there is no air.

On Sunday, April 2, the ConVal Music Department held a mattress fundraiser in the gym.
What sounds like an outlandish idea â bringing an entire mattress showroom into a school for a day to raise funds for student activities â proved to be highly successful with early estimates for a profit exceeding $6,000. The money raised will be used for scholarships for band and choir students.
The music department thanks the students who participated and the community for their support of this fundraiser.

Chris Cox, an education and career counselor with the New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation (NHHEAF) Network, gave a presentation on Wednesday about "Early College and Career Planning."
Cox presented the wide variety of pathways that are open to students after high school, including 2-year and 4-year college options as well as professional and certificate programs. The presentation included a segment on the NH Scholars Program which qualifies successful completers for scholarships and college application fee waivers. Cox also emphasized that specific courses may qualify high school students for eStart and Running Start credits that bring down the overall cost of a post-secondary education.
Cox encouraged students to take the lead in being advocates for their career goals and exploring opportunities outside the classroom through co-curricular activities, community service, summer programs, extended learning opportunities (ELOs), and career exploration programs.
The final portion of the NHHEAF college and career planning presentation was devoted to the calculation of the true cost of college education, the availability of financial aid, and different ways to secure funding from a variety of sources.

Dear Fellow Community Members,
The ConVal School Board wishes to thank you, the voters, for your continued support of our students, staff, and programming. Even three feet of snow, power outages, and a delayed vote could not stop your dedication to our community and our schools.
Voter approval of the 2023-2024 operating budget ensures a continued excellent and supportive education for the children of our district. For the Board and administration, this was a months-long process, developing a budget that is both educationally sound and fiscally responsible in financially difficult times. We also appreciate your support of all remaining articles, from the building capital reserve trust fund to the health maintenance trust fund.
Please help us welcome both new and re-elected School Board members: William Bryk (Antrim), R. Michael Hoyt (Bennington), Thomas John Kirlin (Francestown), Dan Harper (Hancock), Greg Kriebel (Peterborough), and Jim Fredrickson (Sharon).
Thank you again for your support. For a .pdf file with detailed results, please click here.
Students demonstrated the SMS core belief by working cooperatively to achieve a common goal as an advisory activity.

On a field trip with Andria Johnson and Karen Fabianski, ConVal Physical Science students recently had an opportunity to explore several aspects of sustainable building practices that are incorporated in the Harris Center for Conservation Education in Hancock.
Students learned how to conduct an energy audit by working their way through eight stations located throughout the building. Harris Center guides taught students how to measure electricity usage with Kill-A-Watt monitors and how to evaluate the energy savings of LED lights. Students got to test the interior and exterior temperatures of single-, double-, and triple-pane windows to measure heat loss. In other areas, they applied their math skills to determine how much water the Centerâs composting toilets save, and to work out how much forest area is required to sustainably grow the amount of wood used to heat the building with the pellet boiler.
Thank you, Harris Center, for this unique applied learning experience!

Congratulations to ConVal High School science teacher Carol Young who has been selected by the nonprofit organization Ecology Project International (EPI) to participate in an 8-day Teacher Fellowship in Costa Rica in April.
She will be immersed in the rainforests and beaches of Costa Ricaâs Caribbean slope. Days will be spent collecting data and planning hands-on lessons near Pacuare Reserve, a field research station managed by EPI.
Young will work alongside researchers and instructors on a variety of ongoing ecological studies, such as monitoring leatherback sea turtles and observing the behavior and social structures of primates.
Throughout the program, Young and other Fellows will learn strategies they can bring back to their classrooms to help students observe, question, collect data, and critically analyze the world around them.
Established as a nonprofit organization in 2001, the mission of Ecology Project International (EPI) is to inspire youth with nature and empower them with science, fostering tomorrowâs leaders. EPI envisions a diverse movement building communities that cherish and restore the ecosystems that sustain them.
For more information on EPIâs programs or how teachers can apply for next yearâs EPI Teacher Fellowships, visit their website at www.ecologyproject.org/teacher-fellowships.

Both practices will start at 2:30 sharp and end at 4:00.. Players will then go home on the late bus, walk, or be taken home by their parents by 4:10. Girls will be transported to Adams and back to South Meadow in time for the late bus. Softball players could be collected at Adams by there parents as well. For HOME games softball players must be picked up by their parents at Adams Playground after the game and baseball players at SMS.
Playing Baseball and Softball at South Meadow is a 4-5 weekday commitment so all players trying out must be able to make this commitment.
Players must have in their respective coachesâ possession a parent permission form by the first day of tryouts. An updated physical form must be in our nurses office by the first day of tryouts. The physical form expires every two years. Any SMS athlete trying out, that has not take the initial impact test this year or last year, must take the test before trying out. You may access how to take the test on the SMS website. See attached impact test letter please.
My name is Tod Silegy and I am the Athletic Director at South Meadow School. This letter is to inform you about 2023 Softball and Baseball Try Outs at SMS.

Dear parents of ANY South Meadow School Student that would like to play a 2023 spring sport at South Meadow School, starting March 27, 2023. Softball, Baseball, or The Running Club Team.
My name is Tod Silegy and I am completing my 23rd year at South Meadow School as Physical Education Teacher, Athletic Director, and Boys Soccer Coach and Girls Softball Coach.
To play a sport at the high school level or middle school level in the ConVal district, ALL athletes must take the Initial Impact Concussion Test. This test is not a competition and there is no score, but the test does create a baseline for each athleteâs brain when it is healthy.
Hopefully this will not happen, but if your child does receive a concussion that is verified by your primary care physician while playing a sport for SMS, your child would have to sit out practices and games until your primary care physician clears your child to resume participating. Once the primary care physician clears your child to resume play, your child would have to take the Post-Concussion Impact test. The Post-Concussion Impact Test would then be compared to your childâs Initial Impact Baseline Test, and if it compares well, your child would be allowed to resume play for SMS.
Please have your child take the Initial Impact Test at home, this week if possible.
Below is the link to take the Initial Impact Test. Your child should be in a quiet place that will be undisturbed until completed. Click on the link, then put in the Impact Test Code, then follow the prompts until you get to the âstart test.â
Ideally a parent should help your child get through the first part of the testâs demographics. The test asks for name, birthdate, etc., but also questions about add, headaches, dizziness, etc. My experience tells me many student athletes are not sure how to answer these questions. You may also click that you do not want to complete any demographics. After the test is started, your child should be able to handle the test on their own. In the end you do not have to do any emailing of results. Just sign out!
All information goes to and is stored in the ConVal Athletic Initial Impact Test data base. You do not have to send me any information.
This test is good for any other sport your child would like to play throughout their year at SMS, and the test is good for next year as well. If you child did NOT take the test last year or this year, they HAVE TO take it this year for spring sports.
To activate this link, go to the SMS website, click under programs and services, click on sports, click on sports pages, then scroll down. Click on the link that looks like the above, then put in code, and it will activate taking the impact test.

Good Afternoon ConVal Community,
This certainly has been a challenging few days for all of us, and we recognize that, for some of you, that challenge continues.
It is important that students have the opportunity to attend school, so school will be open tomorrow Friday, March 17, 2023.
However, many of our roads remain too narrow for our buses to travel through. In order to provide all students with the chance to come to school, we will be running limited, main-roads-only bus routes, and we will be asking families to bring students to specific locations to access transportation or, alternatively, to drive students to school themselves.
To be sure that families have the time necessary to bring their students to a centralized stop, there will be a two-hour delay tomorrow, March 17, in the ConVal School District.
Between 5 PM and 6 PM this evening, bus stops and approximate times for those stops will be shared with families; these will be shared by direct email from your studentâs principal, as well as on the ConVal School District website and our social media platforms.
We recognize that this arrangement may not work for everyone. As a result, if you choose to keep your child home or are unable to bring your child to the central bus location, their absence tomorrow will be marked as excused.
Our goal is to provide every student with the opportunity to attend school tomorrow. This is neither an ideal situation nor a perfect solution, but it is the fabric of our District to embrace difficult situations and make the best of challenging circumstances.
Thank you for your support and patience as we navigate the impacts of this significant snowstorm.
Be well,
Kimberly Rizzo Saunders Superintendent ConVal School District

Students spent the week learning about sculpture with Mr. Shapiro this week. They explored and used a variety of clay tools as well as applied some helpful techniques to make their work good and strong. Once completed, their work was "fired" (or baked) in the oven to harden up. The students then painted their one of a kind, unique sculptures!

On Friday, Senator Maggie Hassan visited the Region 14 Applied Technology Center in celebration of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month. Hassan visited all program areas: digital photography, careers in education, business, manufacturing, and engineering.
During her tour, Hassan interacted with students, asking them about the CTE classes they were taking and about their plans for the future, after graduation from ConVal High School. She also spoke about the legislative proposals that have been introduced in Washington to draw greater attention to the importance of career and technical education in preparing young students for their futures in the highest need jobs areas in the trades.
An unexpected fire alarm during the Senator's visit brought the entire school out into the parking lot, demonstrating the effectiveness of the school's emergency procedures. It was also a time for students and staff members to pose for selfies and pictures with Hassan in an informal setting.

Students in Randy Stetzer's Honor Chemistry classes are currently conducting experiments and measurements in calometry. The aim of the lab is to determine how many units of food energy (calories) are contained is various popular snack foods.
By burning a variety of food items below a can of water and noting the increase in temperature that is being captured by an electronic probe in the can connected to their Chromebooks, students determine the temperature change and make conclusions about the amount of energy in the food.

On Thursday, ConVal High School held its annual spring Open House. The event gave parents and guardians an opportunity to meet with their studentâs TASC homeroom teacher, classroom teachers, and school counselor. ConVal School Board members Dick Dunning and Alan Edelkind were also in attendance to meet and greet parents.
More than 100 families came out to interact with teachers and school counselors. On breaks between classroom visits, they enjoyed seeing examples of student work, such as a wall of 2D artwork in the art wing and a slideshow of photographs for which students had won Scholastic Medals in the digital photography area. Some parents signed up to volunteer at future school activities.
Parallel to the second semester Open House, parents of incoming students also had an opportunity to visit the school and to meet principal McKillop and other members of the administration, including Director of School Counseling Terri Drogue. ATC Director Jen Kiley joined families on tours of the Applied Technology Center facilities.

The ConVal School Board wishes to remind residents of the 9 district towns of the upcoming interactive community forum the board and district administration are hosting in-person and online.
The forum will take place Monday, March 6, from 6-8 p.m. at the Lucy Hurlin Theater at ConVal High School, and will also be accessible via live stream.
The forum will feature four presentations highlighting different aspects of the budget development process and will detail the budget figures that are most consequential for the community to know. The presentations will include a laymanâs view of the budget, an explanation of the budget process, an overview of significant budget drivers, and highlight the goals and initiatives of the proposed budget and detail how property taxes are impacted by the School Budget.
Throughout the evening, there will be opportunities for the in-person and online audiences to ask questions. Each question will be answered by the presenter or by a member of the School Board or Administration. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions on district-related topics other than the budget
The live stream will be done as a YouTube event that will be available as it happens, and a recording will be accessible after the event concludes. Dear ConVal Community,
I am writing to inform you of an incident at Peterborough Elementary School, where an apparent hoax phone call made a non-credible threat against school safety. Similar hoaxes have been carried out against other districts in New Hampshire today, and we have coordinated with the New Hampshire Department of Education in response to this incident.
At 11 a.m. today Peterborough Police responded to Peterborough Elementary School after receiving a call claiming shots had been fired at the school.
Students were not present at the time, since vacation week remains ongoing. The threat was thoroughly investigated and deemed to be an instance of âswatting,â similar to those that have occurred at schools throughout New England in recent weeks.
Peterborough Police, out of an abundance of caution, conducted a building search and perimeter check, confirming there were no unauthorized individuals on or near school property, nor any threat to the school.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Peterborough Police Department. Please see this press release from the Department of Safety.
I know news like this can be concerning, and even though it was a hoax, itâs a matter we take with the utmost seriousness. Thankfully, we have no reason to believe that there is any danger to students or staff stemming from this incident.
If any parent or guardian has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
I am writing to inform you of an incident at Peterborough Elementary School, where an apparent hoax phone call made a non-credible threat against school safety.

The ConVal School Board is pleased to invite stakeholders to an upcoming community forum, where they will have the opportunity to engage with the board and learn more about the districtâs work with students and the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
The forum will take place Monday, March 6, from 6-8 p.m. at the Lucy Hurlin Theater at ConVal High School and will be accessible via live stream.
âWe believe in providing a venue where the ConVal community is engaged and informed and all can discuss, share knowledge, and talk to each other about topics of mutual interest,â School Board Chair Janine Lesser said. âThese forums are a way for our community to stay connected with the District and have an active role in the work we do, so Iâm hopeful our community will take part.â
After the second and fourth presentations, there will be an opportunity for the in-person and online audiences to ask questions. Each question will be answered by the presenter or by a member of the School Board or Administration. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions on topics not related to the budget.
The live stream will be done as a YouTube event that will be available as it happens, and a recording will be accessible after the event concludes. To view this forum via live stream at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 6, click here (https://www.youtube.com/c/ConValEvents) and select the â2023 March 6 Community Forumâ video from the list of available videos.
To send in a question via e-mail please use Forum@conval.edu. Ahead of the forum, community members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the work that has been done already on the development of the budget by clicking here (https://schoolboard.convalsd.net/budget/).
At the conclusion of the forum, attendees will have the opportunity to meet and speak with board members and district administrators. To view the agenda for the forum, click here.

Just before Winter Break, ConVal High School's Spirit Week ended with an all-school rally and a basketball game that put the Unified Team up against the Faculty/Staff Team.
The rally began with a spirited tic-tac-toe game played with jerseys and each of the four classes â freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors â forming teams.
The basketball game proved to be the audience favorite with students and staff cheering both teams and applauding wildly when either of the teams scored.
In between the quarters of the game, there were more class-related contests, including a ConVal Quiz game that tested student familiarity with ConVal-centered trivia, such as which sports team last won a state championship.
Though much of the Unified vs. Faculty/Staff exhibition game was close, it ended with a rather decisive final score of 62:48 in favor of the Unified squad. Congratulations!

Ms. Colleen's preschoolers love making art together! Students practice painting at the easel, crafting colorful and creative creations!
The week before February break is Spirit Week at ConVal High School. Monday's theme was "Dress Like a Teacher (Staff Member) Day."
It was a fun day for everyone, with students guessing what their chosen teacher would wear that day. Some students went to great lengths to be as authentic as possible, as these photos show.
The Awesome Potatoes were indeed awesome yesterday and not only won a trophy but also earned one of the 6 invitations available to MS teams from NH/VT to the VEX IQ World Championship in Dallas as well as a $1200 scholarship to cover the entry fee for Worlds.

There were more than 20 community partners who represented six career pathways: Arts & Communication, Business Management & Technology, Industrial & Engineering Technology, Health Services, Human Services, and Natural Resources & Agriculture.
This event was designed to integrate what students have been learning this year in their Career Exploration instruction using the Xello learning platform. In a further return to a pre-COVID school culture, ConVal's "Grateful Bread" tradition made a comeback at the high school on Friday.
ILS students make and sell various types of breads (e.g., pumpkin, banana, banana chocolate chip). Each slice is reasonably priced at $1 and all proceeds go to help a member of our ConVal Community.
The "Grateful Bread" sale facilitates both conversational interactions and practical math skills for students and in addition helps foster an inclusive community spirit at ConVal High School.
